worked up the courage for about a year now, but i passed my driving test a couple days ago and could finally upgrade my license! this is the first time in a long time i feel like i've achieved something good, despite the long road ahead to something stable.

I won't come out of this period of my life unscathed, but I will be stronger and more resilient than before.

Gutted that I'm too exhausted after this week to spend the night out to watch the current lunar eclipse, but I'm still very fond of this photo I somehow achieved during the lunar eclipse back in Nov 2022.

Kodak Portra 400 film, 6x12(ish) medium format + multiple exposures on the same negative.

The long flight back to NZ was split by stopping in Honolulu for a few days - thank god. Not the first time I've been to Hawaii, but it was great to rent a board - I hadn't surfed for 8+ years and I felt redeemed after a few attempts.

Shoutout to dog + the single pair of boots I used for the trip.

Back to SF for a few days, I hung out with the same friends I met for New Years for a drive through the city, eating an awesome dinner, and trying Boba for the first time. Driving through town with friends & the music on ... unforgettable.

The last day was crazy foggy so I decided to wander around.

I felt more fulfilled by completing a ~1400ft climb towards the Vernal and Nevada Falls. The path was extremely icy at the higher elevation, but packing mountain spikes / crampons made the climb and descent a breeze.

I wish I had more time to do some overnighters, but that's a reason to return.

Not a particularly difficult hike, but Tuolumne Grove was spectacular in the snow. Getting up early in the morning was the right call - a giant sequoia forest with not a single person in sight was super peaceful.

Throughout this trip I was itching to shoot film instead of digital, but alas.

Yosemite National Park was breathtaking. It's been on my bucket-list for some time ever since taking up the study of photography early on.

We got to stay in a small lodge just outside of the park itself for a few days so my family could relax and I could make use of the hiking gear I had.

San Francisco is huge! Before heading to Yosemite National Park the following day, I stopped overnight in SF for New Years. I got to meet a few furries at Pier 39 - one of which being a friend I've known online for 4+ years - to eat dinner and watch the fireworks. Not a single moment was wasted!

Sayin' goodbye to Canada, we drove back to Calgary to get ready for our flight to San Francisco. On our way back we checked out a wolfdog sanctuary -- while the wolfdogs were amazing to watch (at one point howling), these two adorable livestock guardian dogs definitely stole the show for me.

We spent our last day in Lake Louise driving through the Icefields Parkway. Unfortunately not very great weather, but while my parents opted to stay near the car I went up to the foot of Athabasca Glacier.

I spent the last night wandering up a frozen river looking at the stars.

Walking past the crowd and across the lake itself, there's a trail that leads further into the valley. After about an hour though, the snow got a bit too heavy and deep to go further. I won't ever forget the absolute silence one moment, and the sound of an echoing avalanche further off in the valley

Next was Lake Louise, a fair distance past Banff. On the way there I walked through Johnston Canyon which had been completely frozen over - to no one's surprise. We stayed in a very cozy lodge in a town only a bit out from the lake itself.

I do a lot of hiking from this point forward.

Banff was very cool. Mountains here felt super-sized compared to those in NZ. On Christmas Day we boarded a gondola up Sulphur Mountain where we had lunch, and then spent the evening in the township for dinner.

Flying into Calgary, our second stop was Canmore. A humble little town just before Banff so we could drive in whenever. While we stayed in Canmore we tried dog sledding, and I did a couple of small hikes to fill time.

Please meet Gouda, my lovely lead dog, and an unnamed protagonist.

I spent the last day I had in Vancouver by walking along the waterfront to go to the aquarium. What made the experience even better was meeting and experiencing the aquarium with a friend I got to meet in person for the first time - and first furry I've met in person. A couple milestones there.

Once in Vancouver, I squeezed a lot in immediately. A sea plane out to Victoria for a day, Capilano Suspension Bridge Park with Polaroid, and right before going up the gondola to Grouse Mountain to see the ski field. Because of Christmas nearing, the field was also hosting a walkthrough light-show.

The first & hardest part of the trip was the flight to Vancouver, a grueling 13 hours. Tagging along with my parents was also challenging. In some way I did enjoy the overnight flight - I was feeling really positive about seeing a country other than the Pacific Islands and the east coast of Aussie.

My overseas adventure comes to an end tomorrow with an 8 hour flight back & a 3 hour jump the following day.

I'm tired + ready to go home, but I made a lot of memories & I'm grateful for the experience. Once home, if I get the courage to open up, I'll make a thread about what I've been up to. 💙
