with Troughton, the two heavyweight actors absolutely anchor the TV series. Certainly it’s possible to play Abner with more bluster and less Ricardian villainy. The book makes him less of a crime boss and more of a magician. I shall ponder on the Richard element next time I watch, thank you.

There’s a lot of the “I can smile, and murder while I smile” faux jollity about the Rev Boddledale. And he shows himself capable of ‘great wickedness’, presumably including the murder of choirboys etc. I think Stephens plays him with Shakespearean relish, because that’s how he was, and
