Carving Peony design on a 'Gwiyal technique Buncheong jar' #korea #pottery #buncheong #clay #art
One of the 'Buncheong-sagi' decorative techniques is that white slip(Sanggam) was applied to the surface using a wide and thick brush, and the brush marks were left as decoration.
This scene the process of decorating 'Buncheong' pottery, a type of pottery from the 15th~16th centuries Joseon Dynasty in KOREA using the 'sang gam' technique. Firstly, the potter shapes the rich form of the buncheong pottery on the kick wheel. Then, they sculpt shapes such as fish, peony flowers, lotus flowers, dragons, and use a technique called INHWAMUN to stamp pattern designs. Once the sculpting and stamping process is complete, they apply a white pottery slip called 'sang gam' over it and let it dry. Next, they scrape away the excess parts, leaving a natural beige color on the sculpted areas.

cleaned up, dried out, and finally ready for bisque! these little weirdos gave me plenty of trouble, but now they’re standing in formation like they’ve behaved all along. fingers crossed they survive the kiln.

this was my first ever piece. it’s lumpy, uneven, and shaped like it’s holding a secret. I’ve made a lot since, but this little gremlin still lives rent-free on my shelf. we all start somewhere.
