I honestly believe that up until Vox used Might of Lilith that Alastor was just playing with him. That “You’re nothing if not predictable“ was said with too affectionate a voice and look for him to not have misunderstood where Vox’s headspace was trending as they began to fight

TBH I always thought those lines were a generalized take about how alcohol is easier than the vulnerability of human relationships. Given he didn’t really understand the depth of his feelings for Angel at that point I suspect I’m on the right track

Pentious wanted to be good and was ashamed that he wasn’t, but his fear kept driving him into the safety of either inaction or violence. Fear degraded his personal integrity and moral coherence. Working through his fear and being brave has transformed him as a character.

I think he’s changed and is a different person. But I think what you’re getting at is that framework of “total depravity” of the soul isn’t at play in this show. With a lot of flavors of Christianity it’s almost like you’re presumed guilty until you perform innocence convincingly enough for others.
