p. xvii The second and related point made by this book is that the state-sponsored expulsion of the 1830s was a turning point for indigenous peoples and for the United States. Expulsion was "the worst evil that can befall them," stated Neha Micco to his fellow Creek citizens. It was a "scheme...to get rid of them," wrote the great Cherokee leader John Ross. The dispossession of thousands of families was an "act of usurpation...unparalleled in history," asserted the Choctaw leader George Colbert. Many White Americans shared the same sentiment. Residents in upstate New York wrote of the "indelible disgrace of our Republic" should indigenous people be expelled. Another group from Portage County, Ohio (just off Lake Erie), insisted that Congress's actions would determine "whether the future Historian of our Country shall applaud their measures, or brand the character of this young and boasting Republic with infamy and disgrace."
