How I do a commission.
They send me photos of desired scene. After we decide, they choose the palette.I then do a painting in a small size to let them see my vision. We decide on changes.I show them stages of the painting during process.
The project is about six weeks. Their wishes count, not mine.
The smaller our tribe becomes, the narrower our thoughts. In small tribes it’s us against them. We lost the ability to meet between tribes to learn new information. Our government has increasingly become tribal. There are tribes in the art world. Lots of jealousy, elitism, but generosity & kindness.

Some people feel compelled to correct others on petty issues that are unimportant. I refer to those who feel joyful about their supposed superiority in knowledge. I call them dream killers. We might enjoy a memory of events long ago. The dream killer is compelled to correct our story.

Morning is lovely. I love my routine of coffee, then going out for visits with wild friends. The squirrels come right up to me, getting ready for food. The crows show up and raise their usual racket in the big cedar tree near the platform feeder. Oh how I love my murder family.

Be ready as an artist. What do you want for your career? Changes will be part of career, due to circumstances. You must do things in the business of art that you don’t want to do. If you like to be in the limelight, you will have a different path than those who quietly make a living as an artist.

I love citrus trees. I remember traveling down US 27 through endless miles of groves. When in bloom the aroma was intoxicating. My daddy took me upstairs to the roof of the citrus shop on US441. What a view. I have been painting the trees this year. People still love the iconic symbol of Florida.

Artists are known for independent natures. We don't have to be trendy. We can be contemporary, traditional, illustrative, etc. We can be tonal, saturated in our palette. We find our way. There should be a sign saying “No Art SnobsAllowed".
Others worry about status. Let's give a leg up when we can.

My studio is back to a gallery/tea room. I am ready to host tea parties for groups up to ten. Many paintings sold at the studio tour. I’ve been doing a lot of studies, before I do more complex versions of the scenes to paint. I take my time on the new versions, a good way to improve skills.

I love blue and painted buntings. They are migratory spend the cool months here in the south. I’ve seen blue buntings out here, but never seen painted bunting here. I have seen them in botanical gardens. They belong to the genus Passerina. They live in dense bush, the males perch in the open to sing.

I had visits in my studio. My friend, glass artist Bettianne, her niece and granddaughter. Her granddaughter is adorable and her niece is so kind. Find Bettianne’s gorgeous glass trays at the Artisans’ Guild Gallery. My other visitor was ceramist Kate Murray, master ceramist. Her work is inspiring.

In art school painting professors put out plenty of paint on the pallet. They never worried about waste. They jars of brushes, and new ones. These were lessons for me. I have numbers of brushes, canvas, paints, and frames. I wait for sales. I’m not miserly about materials, enhancing creative process.

My daughter went to Troy University in Troy AL,years ago. While she attended, I would explore. It was very lovely.I found a public access lake called Pike County Lake. There were picnic tables and lovely grounds around the lake. I spent hours there. Many fields were in cotton, and they were beautiful.

Today’s my last painting class.I’m going to rearrange my studio into a proper gallery.I’ll offer tea parties again for visitors.I have garnered painting knowledge in my journey as a painter.I want to share it, in an easier way for my students and myself.Coaching virtually will be so much easier.

I like to teach for a couple of years and then stop. I am going to change to coaching painting and marketing on FaceTime in October.Anyone with an I-pad or I-phone can do this. Some artists need a bit of coaching and gentle critique for their paintings, or marketing advice. I’ll book Fridays for it.

I had a new guest beside the bird feeder. With the squirrels and crows was a full grown turkey hen. She was a beauty.
She grazed along, among the others, as was her due. The crows were furious to have been relegated to non apex status. They yelled expletives at her. She simply ignored them.

I’m enjoying my favorite wildflower. The bloom is a deep yellow. I’m thinking about paint colors, how they relate to nature. Quality brands do well. I see red iron oxide, lemon yellow, sap green, ultramarine, yellow ochre, and subtle violets. Being a naturalist enhances my painting experience.

Painting is hard. I didn't understand until I reached 30 years of painting. I am merely a student. The easel is the great equalizer for painters. I only have myself to compete with. My advice is to have the time of your life. Enjoy every painting and never envy those who might be more successful.

Step out the zone you have built for yourself.Don’t fear to do bad paintings. This will improve work and give you confidence.Inviting non artist friends into you life will provide you with collectors.Try mediums, brushes, palette colors, canvas sizes, for the fun of painting. You’ll never be bored.

Many ideas never come to fruition. They don’t have to pass rigorous tests that make them good.I have hundreds of ideas every year. Keeping them helps me know when to save, or discard. Many are tried and tossed as simply don’t work. They are free after all.No pressure to be successful all the time.

I’m a high contrast painter. I use full range of values, from dark to light. It took me years to learn composing, value distribution were more important than color. Good painting is the BIG THREE. Composing first, values second, color third in importance. If the first two are bad, third won’t help.

I have a new burn barrel. I’m doing a bit of trimming in the yard before the studio tour in May. I burned yard debris. It made me think of childhood and time spent with my daddy. He taught me to set a proper fire and always had a burn barrel. I helped him load the barrel. Find memories.

Saving nature is crucial to survival. There is a rhythm to the natural world we are destroying, here in Florida. My time as an artist at Fair Oaks teaches more about the natural world, than all the
books and classes. I encountered a hawk, who landed feet away. We passed the time in companionship.

I saw a film making mulberry paper. It was very interesting.
I use recycled paper. I use mail, post cards, old print outs, the top cover page of my paper palette. I discard the plastic see through envelopes. I never throw away paper. It feels good to reuse our precious trees once they are gone.

I don’t lose focus on who cares for my work. Marketing is really taking care of people who want to help you. These are the people who include friends & family.
My collectors share common interests.
My collectors are ranchers, biologists, foresters, arborists. They share my passion for wild FL.

This is an interesting palette that I found on the Internet.
Magenta
Transparent Red Iron Oxide,Ultramarine Blue,Payne’s Gray,Yellow Ochre,Titanium White I used it to do this painting. It makes a lovely palette for landscapes. It is very nice for earth colors and all the blues and purple ranges.
