Get your broth in the pot. (Twice as much potato as leek is my preference and broth enough to cover the whole thing.) Strain out the leaves -- or ladle the broth in, if that's easier. Let the potatoes basically fall apart.

Good hot or cold (vichyssoise), great for bread dipping.

While everything is getting busy smelling good, peel and chop up your potatoes into chunks. Throw clean potato chunks into the pot with the buttered leeks as you chop.

Don't let the leeks burn, but give your tea time to steep too. When things smell good, you're good to go.

Chop your leeks: throw the greens in a big pot of water and the whites into a pot with some butter. For two or three leeks I throw a stick of butter in, but I'm decadent.

The water will be leek tea (broth), so add stuff that smells good: bay leaf, peppercorn, herbs lying around, etc.

Credit to @stcymsn.bsky.social for putting words to this principle in their dissertation! It's a principle I had seen elsewhere in more words, and had been trying to follow myself, but the clear framing here helped so much in my efforts to communicate how I was approaching conversations.
