Quick question if I may (next year): is russia really stashing 173 000 kg of gold in their NWF? That would be almost 10 times their GDP (~24 trillion USD) - I'm guessing I'm missing something since they also dilapidated a good chunk of their initial stash within a year.

That's debt on paper.
Given Russia hides its debt through commercial papers and corporate/crown-corp debt, etc, they're closer to 250% of debt to GDP.
That's why despite issuing more debt (see OFZ thread) they barely cover the Interests
