It wasn't playing Rust that made him do this. It's a decently popular survival game that came out 12 years ago. You run around collecting shit and building fortresses then defending them from other players. Hell, a chunk of that time probably was spent idling on the server screens.

It's not that kind of game that you "beat". Rust is a survival game where the official servers wipe every month, so every month you start from scratch on whatever servers you play on, plus there were constant changes and updates to the game. It's not like playing Mario Bros over & over.
