Yeah, there’s definitely no law that would stop him. That would be wild, though, since he’s moving out in 39 months, right? This is definitely the behavior of someone who understands they’re just a tenant.

Not like it matters, in terms of outcome. And they’re breaking who knows how many laws on the regular with much more immediate and substantial impacts on people’s lives. I just assumed they were breaking some kind of law here too?

There has to be some process they’re ignoring, though, right? National Capital Planning Commission? Commission of Fine Arts? Or did they really just never give anyone jurisdiction over White House rehab because it was assumed the approval process would need to be totally elaborate and bespoke?

Trump’s advisor on the Smithsonian could have a history PhD and 20 years running a museum and it wouldn’t change that basic fact.

In the case of the Smithsonian, the main question isn’t ‘is this person qualified?’ it’s ’under what legal authority is the White House even doing this?’ It’s wildly out of bounds for the President’s normal engagement with the Institution and just a blatant authoritarian move.
