They like to have a decently warm basking spot, definitely go for a light that creates warmth other than just light. Check your fixture. There can be a wattage limitation

Also, upgrading to even the standard prisma colors will change the game for you. It’s very unfortunate how expensive some materials are.I found when I bought a small set of expensive pencils it will force you to blend and make colors and they lay on the paper so much better.

This shows how many colors I build up and how much saturation there is on the paper. Using some black fine liners for details can really help too

Ah ok! So i almost exclusively work in colored pencil and I have found that slight textured Bristol paper is very good. Also think layers and lots of them till you build up your tones. I use heavy Burnishing on my pieces to make them almost look painting.
