Post a picture you took (no description) to bring some zen to the timeline.

A challenge of drone-based behavioral observation is that it's often difficult to determine the sex of individuals in species (like zebras 🦓) that aren't sexually dimorphic.

Sometimes, though, you catch a break...

In honor of fall's arrival in Konstanz, here's one of my favorite photos from a few years ago, taken near the Mainau.

Since it's October now 👻...

I love the spooky atmosphere of this figure - a reconstruction of the collective visual field of a herd of Grevy's zebras 🦓.

Done entirely from data derived from drone imagery.

Hi, I'm Blair!

I use drones to study the collective anti-predator behavior of zebra and antelope on the African savanna.

I'm a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Konstanz, Germany.

I am very much an ungulate enthusiast and thought seeing the Serengeti/Mara wildebeest migration would be my peak wildlife experience. But seeing these bats emerge from the forest in the evening was on a whole other level. If you get the chance to go to Kasanka during bat season, take it!

Here’s some waterbuck, showing off their similarly heart-shaped noses for comparison.

Waterbuck and puku are in the same genus, Kobus.

I ticked off 3 new ungulate species in Zambia: sitatunga, common duiker and puku.

This is a puku - looks like a waterbuck (heart-shaped nose!) crossed with an impala.

Next year’s goals are to the see the resident sable and get a decent sitatunga pic.

I didn’t get to pull out my macro lens as much as I’d hoped in Zambia. The invertebrate life was pretty amazing at Kasanka.

Another dawn, but this one back in Europe. Zambia was amazing, and the bats were incredible. Can’t wait to see what comes of the data, and to return to Kasanka for more Eidolon next year!

Straw-colored fruit bat colony in slow motion flight.

The bats make these collective milling flights prior to departing for a night of foraging. Why? To test the wind? Stretch their wings? Decide where to feed? We don’t know, but maybe someday we will...

We are using a drone to film the bats as they depart for the night. The sunset provides quite the dramatic background!
