That's key- wearing them inconsistently is weird. if you're trying to deceive, you will be careful to interact with them and wear the glasses in the way most average people do. He doesn't, though! Ergo I think they're real but very low Rx, and like Sam says, he weaponizes them.

Also the other point I made with @lunarriviera.info is that I think he needs them slightly, they are not totally fake, because if they WERE totally fake, he would be much more careful about wearing them consistently.
