Resilience and Hope
Despite these challenges, Chicago has a vibrant trans community that continues to fight for visibility, respect, and their rights.

Public Harassment: On a more everyday level, many trans people face harassment in public spaces whether that’s verbal abuse, being denied service, or being confronted with dangerous levels of violence.

Legal Challenges: Issues around name and gender marker changes on official documents can create barriers for trans people in daily life, such as traveling, opening bank accounts, and more.

Housing Inequality: Many trans individuals struggle to find safe and affordable housing. They are at higher risk of homelessness or eviction, especially trans women and people of color.

Employment Discrimination: Despite legal protections in Illinois, trans people are still subject to workplace harassment or outright discrimination. In addition, trans people face difficulties in obtaining jobs due to bias during interviews or background checks.

Trans people face discrimination in healthcare settings, from being misgendered by doctors to encountering a lack of competent and inclusive care, especially in mental health services.
