i liked 'October takes the chair' an 'The Price' from Gaiman, and the opening paragraph to '50 Candles' from Biggers took me there so vividly I could smell the plumaria on the ocean breeze .

she'll be remembered as the lady who plowed over the Rose Garden and destroyed the East Wing. She's worth less than zero. She's cost us way too much and will do so for the rest of her life, unless her husband gets what he deserves.

Earl Derr Biggers wrote the Charlie Chan novels, and his prose is incredible. They aren't really short stories, but they're still fabulous.
