Born in Barbados, Mabel Keaton Staupers (1890-1989) a was a registered nurse & public health advocate. During WWII, she initiated a campaign that ended the exclusion of black nurses from the U.S. Army. #WomensHistoryMonth

The Memphis (TN) Sanitation Strike took place Feb 12-April 16, 1968. After the deaths of 2 men, the majority black workforce demanded higher wages & safety measures. They received support from national civil rights figures, including MLK & Bayard Rustin. #BlackHistoryMonth

The Niagara Movement (1905-09) was a civil rights group founded by W.E.B. DuBois & William Monroe Trotter. Although short-lived, the movement stood apart from other organizations at the time b/c of its unequivocal demand for equal rights. Read more: bit.ly/2ubsBZ1. #BHM

At the National Negro Convention held in Buffalo, NY, Henry Highland Garnet (1815-82) a newspaper editor and pastor captured the attendees' attention w/ his address. "An Address to the Slaves of the United States" called for open rebellion. #BHM

Dr. Williams was also a co-founder of the National Medical Association (NMA) in 1895. The NMA is the largest & oldest national organization for Black physicians in the U.S., founded as an alternative to the AMA, which was for whites-only then.

Daniel Hale Williams, M.D. (1856-1931) was a medical pioneer. The surgeon performed one of the 1st successful open-heart surgeries in 1893. He repaired the pericardium of a patient who had been stabbed. Click the link to read more: bit.ly/2DHiX3U. #BlackHistoryMonth

"Lift Every Voice and Sing," now known as the #BlackNationalAnthem, was written by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) w/ music by his brother J. Rosamond. Johnson was a composer, diplomat, an educator and activist. #BHM

Feb 6: Autherine Lucy (1929-2022), a graduate of
MilesCollege, was the 1st Af-Am to enroll at
@uofalabama.bsky.social. #OTD in 1956, her 3rd day in class, a violent mob descended on the campus. Riots broke out, after which the univ suspended Lucy. Read more:

Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. (1943-1993) was a legendary tennis player & human rights activist. He was the 1st (& still only) Af-Am man to win the US & Australian Open & Wimbledon singles titles. He was the 1st Af-Am man to be ranked World #1.
