DURHAM MINERS’ GALA, SATURDAY 12 JULY: Tony Benn was a true giant of the labour movement and he spoke at Durham Big Meeting more than anyone else in its history.

In his memoirs he captured the spirit and emotion of Europe’s biggest and best celebration of working class culture and solidarity.

Working class solidarity is the foundation of our communities and on May Day we remember the workers whose sacrifice, determination and resistance gave life to the pit villages we love so much today.

The image shows the Blackhall NUM banner at the May Day rally held in Easington back in 1986.

Members of the Blackhall Banner Group met last night to finalise plans for next month's fundraiser to mark 40 years since the end of the 84-85 Strike and the 25th Anniversary of the Banner Group, which we set up to promote the culture and heritage of coal mining in our community. Details to follow.

Our poor little Elena 8 years ago today. At 4 years old she’d already cottoned on that a lifetime of supporting Sunderland was going to send her hopes soaring one day only to crush them underfoot the day after.

40 years ago today the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike ended.

Still proud to be the enemy within.

Never Forget. Never Forgive.

Seven years ago today we said our last farewells to Barry Chambers.

Barry was chair of Blackhall Labour Party for many years and an active member of the Durham Miners’ Association.

He’s shown in the centre of the image next to Tony Benn, another stalwart of the labour and trade union movement.

‘The past we inherit. The future we build’.

The motto of the Durham Miners’ Association reminds us to learn from the struggles and conflict of the past and use the experience to create a better future for all workers.

It’s 4 years since my lovely Dad Bob passed away

He loved the Durham Miners’ Gala and made sure I never missed it when I was a bairn

Alongside his enduring love and guidance it’s shaped everything I believe in and everything I do to this day

On #socialistsunday I’ll raise a glass in his memory

It’s one whole year today since this lad set off for the land where streams of whiskey are flowing.

We’ll raise a glass tonight in his memory.

Born on 22 November 1883 AJ Cook was a miner and secretary of the MFGB during the 1926 General Strike

In recognising his lifelong commitment to the labour and trade union movement he has appeared on many miners’ banners and is shown here on the Blackhall DMA banner alongside Hardie, Benn and Bevan

The ‘inside-out’ church St Andrew’s on Hesleden Road in Blackhall Colliery was built in Stockton in the C19 before it was relocated brick by brick in 1930.

When it was rebuilt the outward facing bricks were reversed to face inwards to hide the black grime and soot built up at its previous location.

Happy birthday to the DMA.

Founded on this day in 1869 the Durham Miners’ Association is 155 years old.
