Sweets rightfully gained acceptance and freedom not commonly enjoyed by most queers and Blacks in Lexington which was segregated at the time. Sweets was rarely harassed because he knew the sexual desires of local powerful white men, which she used as a threat to ensure the safety of herself and other LGBT townies. When police raided a drag performance and arrested drag queens, Sweets called the judge on their case and the charges were dropped. Miss Sweets died in her 90s on Dec. 16, 1983, the Royal Sovereign Imperial Court of All Kentucky named its highest honor the James Herndon Award (Sweet’s birth name), and in 2006, the Lexington Men’s Chorus also named its singing ensemble after his chosen name.

Sweets was a local icon to the extent that residents in Kentucky still remember her. Miss Sweets was born in 1889, becoming an orphan after his uncle left him at a hospital in Lexington where she was taken in by Miss Lake Johnson, the hospital superintendent. Miss Sweets grew up in the hospital and had a career there for 40+ years regarded as the best orderly. There are many stories of Miss Sweets, including being an advocator for local queers and opening his home to them. She helped struggling families with food, rent, and clothes, said to be a “fairy godmother”. “SWEETS WAS THE OFFICIAL TOWN QUEER.” - LOCAL

Wilmer “Little Axe” Broadnax was a gospel singer who worked and recorded with many of the most famous gospel groups in the 40s, 50s & 60s. Born December 28, 1916 in Houston, Broadnax and his older brother Wilbur “Big Axe” were both singers— Little Axe having a strong tenor voice. The brothers relocated to South Carolina to launch their careers. By the 1950s, Wilmer was performing with major Gospel groups eventually becoming lead. His career consists of the following groups: • St. Paul Gospel Singers, Houston, 1930s • Southern Gospel Singers, Los Angeles: 1939-1940 • Little Axe and the Golden Echoes, 19210s • Spiritof Memphis, 1950-1952 • Fairfield Four, Nashville, 1952 • Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, 1960s • Little Axe and the Golden Voices, 1960-1965 Broadnax retired in the late 60s, yet sometimes recorded in the 70s to 80s. He was fatally stabbed allegedly by his girlfriend in 1992 or 1994, and upon examination is when it was revealed he was born female.
