Ohhh yeah this fucking sucks. The best advice I got for that was from @darcylindbergh.bsky.social. I’m a chronic edge-picker, but intentional rest is vital.

Good Morning, Midnight by Jean Rhys. Really liked the structure. Liked that I didn’t care for the main character. Not my favorite from the author, but it is a significant read.

The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus. Didn’t realize this was YA when I picked it up, but I read it. It wasn’t for me. Characters didn’t quite feel lived in, which made the story not have as much real weight as I would have liked. Lots of suggestion of weight.

Calling a Wolf a Wolf by Kaveh Akbar. Tremendous poet. Has some holdovers from Portrait of the Alcoholic, but I was happy to reread those anyway. Highly recommend this book.

Been writing some little prose-y poetic drabbles lately and this little bit from my sunlight boys is something I like. I put a warning bc it's from a later chapter.
I’ve reached heaven with you, I think. I’ve walked over dirt paths, mud caked under my toenails and sweat sheeting my face. You were there, sitting high on a branch, arm low and elliptical, swaying like rope. I climbed up your soft limbs, washed myself in your toothless grin, made a house inside your avidity. You cracked the sky apart like a coconut. Laughter fell in crystalloid sheets from storm clouds and pinched my cheeks and wet my hair. You fed me on mushroom buttons and lichen and soft smiles and a string of words beaded with your history, red and round and small and brown, wooden carvings cold to the touch. I sat on that branch listening until my ass numbed, and I sat there longer yet. We made love on that branch; I never thought about falling. You gave me what was left of you, what the storm clouds made for you, and I scraped around for something to match. I came up short. You sat with me still. You sit with me still. I leave the tree to collect more food on the ground, to talk to the moss and the grubs and commune with gravity. You hold me closer, longer before I leave—every time. I know what you’re thinking. You won’t say; I won’t pry. You’re good, and it spoils me.

Sorry, this book fucked me up a little. Had me crying on the train. I found some passages that I forgot I kept in my phone. I like this one.

Incredible, beautiful prose. Lovely vignettes of life in all the mundanities of old home maintenance and upkeep. (Strong innkeeper vibes) Less than 100 pages, and each word is so so necessary.

I also have the Allamby household set up, and Doug was cooking for the family, while Mary was painting, so they’re great.
Doug, in sweater and jeans, is making hamburgers for dinner. Good for him. Mary wears all black turtleneck and pants like the artist she is. She paints on a canvas on an easel—a woman in a green dress against a hot pink background Alma and Louis play in their very colorful bedroom. They are dressed like pirates.

Some crew couples from last night’s gameplay:
Sims 2 gameplay. A sunburned Stede was woken up by hunger and ordered a breakfast for him and Ed. He and Ed sit at a table in their hotel room eating pancakes. Ed just woke up and is shirtless, while Stede is taking his vacation seriously in a tropical print shirt and shorts. The beach is behind them. The sun hasn’t risen yet. Oluwande and Zheng sit on a cool brown leather couch in a cool red room playing video games. Judging from Zheng’s forward posture she is either so close to winning (more likely) or losing so badly. They are both in modern dress, Oluwande in cool uncle loose pants and camp shirt and Zheng in a long red qipao with combat boots. Archie and Jim play darts. Archie, in camo pants and a yellow tank top, throws a dart, while Jim, in riding pants and boots and leather jacket and flatcap, talks to Archie about Justice (maybe?) indicated by a gavel in a speech bubble above their head. Jack and Izzy pillow fight. Izzy in all black t-shirt and jeans and boots. Jack Rackham in 2000s fur vest and jeans. They’re pillow fighting and before this picture they were flirting and I did not tell them to do that. Or this.

Brain is trash soup so I visited my friends on sims 2 🙃
Sims 2 on a laptop. Onscreen are the best sims renditions I could make of Wee John, Lucius, Black Pete, and Roach in modern clothing. They are standing alongside a house in the green grass of a yard. Wee John does not like Roach for some reason, but Roach really likes Wee John, as indicated by negative and positive signs floating above their heads. They’re also all best friends, according to the double happy faces floating above everyone’s heads. Sims rendition of Buttons, wearing only a conservative fig leaf as he dances in a blue-walled living room to music from a jukebox. Sims renditions of Ed and Stede slow dancing very close and being disgustingly cute. Stede is in a fancy blue suit and Ed is in jeans and a leather jacket. They are dancing in front of a brick wall.
