True. And what they saw was more canonicalized: example - there wasn't a broad alt narrative to Nixon's crimes. Now HHS can say Tylenol causes autism & a large demographic will just nod & say 'yeah, 8chan nailed that years ago' but rarely ask why their doctors disagree. Quality of info = very 1984

I'm not sure we disagree, we're just both articulating parts of the whole. Left/right doesn't really exist on the Political Compass anymore than extreme behaviors can't be reconciled via movement into centered wholeness. Values evolve, & quality of information is key to changing perspectives

And yes, I never knew a blue-haired Sunday school teacher in those days to hold back from using the N-word or to celebrate the assassinations of the '60s. Thankfully urban Texas has a bit more elevated awareness. Ann Richards was once Governor, after all...

And refused to acknowledge a recurrent theme in the Gospels (appearing about 3k times) was articulated in Matthew 25:40 to act "in service even to the least of these" because that sounds a bit too bleeding-heart Libtard. Easier to find someone to blame thru Grievance politics & media

I know all those places, both my parents were New Yorkers. I spent my formative years in Texas, where I was AF ROTC from a lineage of military family & studied Christian theology in the "buckle of the Bible belt": Abilene, home of Dyess AFB. Seen every phase of righteous bigotry & MAGA zealotry

John Birch Society was fringe 60 years ago. Those same ideas got inculcated through the proliferation of supportive media outlets since the early 1990s to bring us to the 4chan, QAnon, MAGA mindset that has avalanched with populism today. You're correct - they're not fringe... Anymore.

1987-1991 Reagan/Bush I finish off the Fairness Doctrine. Immediate response is Rush Limbaugh brings to broadcast what Lee Atwater brought to inside-the-beltway neocon-speak. Then Fox, Brietbart, InfoWars - to the proliferation we see now which prompted the creation of the term "fake news"

The Rise of the Fourth Reich by Jim Marrs gives a good overview of what the trajectory has been. In terms of the "same basis of information", by that I mean our nation had Cronkite, the Washington Post and the Fairness Doctrine. The right-wing at that time was fringe. Think: John Birch Society

Since the rescission of the Fairness Doctrine I've observed we have moved from a country that shares in the same basis of information to one where consumers of right-wing biased media have become so convinced by distortion & deceit that they now think all factual information is fake

One has to be a lowbrow, a bit of a murderer, to be a politician, ready and willing to see people sacrificed, slaughtered, for the sake of an idea, whether a good one or a bad one. ~ Henry Miller
