Jersey girl in exile. Also teacher, historian, mom, calligrapher, hula-hooper. Last two not usually at the same time. Here to listen to what you folks say more than to post what's in my brain.
The Last Duel. Really engaging and the fight scene is incredible.
(Be aware the rape at the center of the case is also vividly described.)

It is great that there's so much coverage of this there. And now I know how to say "people need to know" in Dutch!

Thank you! Glad to see the care for the cemetery and the memory from the Dutch.

It matters to remember. It matters *who* we remember and who we highlight. Telling their stories—all the stories— is how we honor them.

So here's some history to help you remember, or maybe to learn if you didn't know: the experience of Black soldiers in the Netherlands during WWII.
First, a post about the general experience in the Netherlands, from European: www.europeana.eu/es/stories/b...

Recently, it came to light that two plaques honoring the contribution of Black liberators in the Netherlands were removed from the AMBC cemetery there. One is apparently just out of rotation. No explanation was given for the other, which discussed segregation during WWII. 2/6

Well, García Márquez did win it, so that fits.

@99pi.org had an amazing podcast on the Orange Alternative if you want to learn more - go check it out!

I hope to see more of this. Trump's call for the Insurrection Act should terrify us, but we can still point out the absurdity of his actions. And there's really no better way than in a frog suit, apparently- based on video I can't unsee - at times twerking with Uncle Sam suit and maybe a tiger.

The ICE raids and the deployments aren't funny, but they are ridiculous. Challenging them with ridicule takes away their power. ICE arguing that a guy in a frog suit is a threat to justify using force against him makes them look as stupid as they are and undermines all of their own claims.

And it was a fantastic way to challenge an authoritarian government.
A government claiming to fight dangerous subversion by arresting a grownup dressed like a dwarf holding a tampon just looks silly.

The Orange Alternative was a political art group in the 1980s, that drew silly dwarfs everywhere, then walked around with goofy dwarf hats, then walked around as dwarfs while doing things like handing out feminine hygiene products, which were in short supply under Communism.
