Retired scientist, loving father and grandfather, and grieving widower. The rest can wait for later. (Well, I think I can finally add "geyser gazer" without emotional collapse, even if my favorite gazing partner is gone.)
Reposted by Wild Bill, or Doctor J, either way.
today I learned the released version of the song was take one, the first time the band ever actually played the song, and the drummer had never heard it before? unreal
The Edmund Fitzgerald sank 50 years ago today. The next year, the singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot chronicled the tragedy in an unlikely hit single.

A simple message; the intended recipient should not need to be named.

Being descended partially from Irish immigrants fleeing the Great Potato Famine (maybe earlier, but that's most likely), I wish I could see this; thanks, Kate G, for posting.

I interrupt the political noise for a quick sports question. How many of my friends here remember Rudy Tomjanovich?

If you find the name familiar but can't remember why, see my reply. Either way, take a guess where I'm going with this.

I don't usually post obits for people I don't know personally, but as a (relatively) strong chessplayer who had a high regard for both Hort's play and his human qualities, I'm making an exception here. RIP, Vlastimil Hort.

Do the ludicrous Star Wars "holiday" if you must, but remember Kent State.

I just noticed in the middle of a typical websurf. Do any of my gazer friends have any more info? I remember the July event well, no need to rehash that.

Biscuit Basin in Yellowstone National Park to remain closed
A powerful steam explosion rocked Biscuit Basin in Yellowstone National Park last July. While no one was hurt, it was a close call for some visitors and heavily damaged the nearby boardwalk.

I'm curious what people think of this article, which appeared in the local e-paper. Working on finding one with the same content but in a more compatible format.

@grumpifrog.bsky.social You're usually on top of things like this, so: any idea whether the shutdown of fivethirtyeight is attracting journalistic attention? I'm seeing very little of it.

I am unfamiliar with the speaker or organization here, but I will agree from personal experience that something is broken in New Mexico medical care that is causing physicians to leave the state. Any more informed opinions on what he's talking about than mine?
