My 4yo has learned to ride a bike without training wheels recently, but he keeps trying to look behind him while he rides, and inevitably turns the handlebars in the same direction he looks, resulting in much erratic swerving. Kids do not know what they are doing with their bodies half the time...

Haha, although, if their AI actually *could* prove useful stuff then that would be handy. I somehow doubt it will though. At least, not much better than existing theorem proving tools.

Well in our universe it doesn't make much sense, but I think we're supposed to accept that one as true for the sake of fiction. Maybe there were a heck of a lot more aliens out there than it seemed or something.

Same problem, no good. But he could have done that and also adjusted fertility to make it sustainable.

His main problem was that he didn't understand population dynamics. A one-off 50% cut really doesn't buy much time, basically pointless.

He was harsh but fair

Unfortunately they absolutely can. Don't get me wrong, I don't contest Trump's utter stupidity in the slightest. But stupidity is no prerequisite for making evil choices.

Ok the bit about being maximally symmetric is also important.

All the stuff about Lorentzian manifolds is a bit of a distraction. It's important background, but not the main story. It's just saying it's the kind of spacetime you always have to have in general relativity. The bit about curvature is the key thing.

I believe that's why they are highlighting the 5 year length, i.e. it can be prosecuted after Trump leaves office. I suppose he might try Biden's pre-emptive pardon trick though.

Cancer isn't an infectious disease though. Mostly anyway, admittedly a few are caused by viruses.
April 13, 2025 at 8:58 PM
That would be largely pointless. You need good rules that cause the desired outcome, relying on charity just penalizes all the most morally upstanding participants.

I mean his net worth exceeds 300 billion, so even if you directly took 90% of it he'd still have 30 billion. But taxes don't work that way anyway, especially for billionaires, so even a 90% tax rate would do hardly anything to him.

He fired all the people who would have done that.

He doesn't sound very supportive of Israel on this to me: www.sanders.senate.gov/press-releas.... "...Netanyahu has overseen these policies, and the ICC is right to indict him as a war criminal, alongside Mr. Sinwar."

And because the companies making the American stuff likely still have to import things to make the stuff, which will now cost them more.
April 4, 2025 at 9:41 PM
I mean you can do that though. It's just that the American made stuff costs more in the first place, and will cost even more now due to reduced competition.

They are certainly ruining it on purpose, but I'm pretty sure they do think they have a plan to make things better afterwards. Unfortunately though their plans are very stupid, and will certainly not make anything better for 99.99% of people.

Yes it did. The globe is unchanged, just rotated. If you grab a ball or something it will be the easiest way to convince yourself.
April 3, 2025 at 12:31 AM
He made the Greenwich meridian the new equator. If you grab a globe and rotate it like that you'll see it makes sense :).

Christ, I'm not sure that if you added up every word I've said over the last ten years it would go for that long.
