I recently learned about Catherine Nixey’s “The Darkening Age”, which late antiquity scholars absolutely eviscerated, but every major newspaper gave it 5 stars.

I think a great option would be a dramatization of Ken Follett’s novel “The Fall of Giants,” the first third of which covers the social tensions and the IR environment that leads to war from multiple perspectives based on class and place.
