Problem is, it's a lie. Stede has never been more single. And now, he needs a plan. Or rather, four plans. Plan A: Find a boyfriend before Christmas Eve. Plan B: Find someone to pretend to be his boyfriend before Christmas Eve (Lucius will jump in, if necessary, but Mary sort of knows him, so it's not ideal). Plan C: Pretend to break up with non-existent boyfriend right before Christmas Eve. The pros are possible sympathy points, the cons are the non-zero chances that Mary will figure out there never was a boyfriend in the first place. Plan D: Come clean. Stede really doesn't want to do plan D.
