i think about this often, especially in first person games where consistent player speed isn’t necessarily super critical to game balance. equalizing the two often makes diagonal movement *feel* slower despite not being slower. so i agree playing into the placebo can be very cool and fun.

there’s a reason many indie titles resonate so strongly with some people, while others may not care for them or really get what the big deal is. unfiltered expression of the soul of a person or group of people will have a more limited appeal, but those it does reach will never forget it.

i’ve been in environments where exciting prospects and ideas are shot down immediately because they “stray too far” from the desired image of the product. this is fair. but i can’t help feeling this stifling of “out there” ideas can really impact someone’s ambitions negatively.

when creativity and passion is put through a filter, you can still make an incredible product. but that’s all it is. a product. one designed to appeal to the widest possible audience. there’s nothing wrong with this, really. i’m sure plenty of folks love their jobs at these studios, i just couldn’t.

a good political artist ensures they never draw anything intuitively understandable, because labeling everything to spell out your metaphor is the most fun part of the process.

every developer is allowed to place one (1) sign out of bounds describing how annoying something was during development. use yours wisely.

working to silence the voice in my head that thinks i can strike gold and skip the part where i mess up over and over again. hopefully, moving on from the spaces that shelter and validate that feeling is a good first step.
