Oook?
I guess the issue is suburb as lifestyle choice vs economic necessity. EG in Montgomery County, a DC suburb, the housing mix has been trending away from single family since the 80s, because available land is scarce & costly — even 15+ miles outside the DC Beltway.

Wouldn't you, just.

And still, here we are.

Schadenfreude ist auch eine Freude.

Yeah. My burban neighborhood certainly isn't what people remember from the 80s & before: "majority-minority" (can anyone suggest a better, concise way of phrasing that?), & over 30% foreign-born. It's a fascinating mix, & now my (college age) kids feel awkward in a less mixed community.

A lot of suburban growth is driven by economic growth + NIMBY, not ideology.

Few families can afford urban housing on the Coasts. EG a small house a friends' parents bought in the 70s in DC on 1 govt salary now costs $2 mil. If you can't afford that, you pretty much have to move to the suburbs.

Do you live in a suburb, and if so, where? Rural manor fantasies? Maybe in Denton or McKinney TX.

In big East & West coast cities, suburbs have grown bc close in housing costs >$1 mil. Most live in townhouses, bc even suburbs are pricey. Lawn mowing takes 20 minutes & an extension cord.

It all spills over into corporate life. To survive in today's economy, mid level workers are told they must promote themselves & their employers. What is your "personal brand"? The result is an endless stream of contact requests & mind numbing posts -- free "content" for LinkedIn.

And NJ suburbs.

Brother!

Given the absurd cost of housing in East Coast cities, most Metro area residents now live in neighborhoods I'd consider suburban. But they're not much like suburbs of the 70s & 80s. EG, my suburban county is majority minority & over 30% foreign-born.

I think that depends greatly on the city & the suburb. A lot of Sunbelt cities are effectively all suburban, but I'm pretty sure that most Las Vegas residents don't think of themselves as "rural" (I grew up there.)

How nice for you.

I got "mortifying".

To my knowledge, in the antebellum era, the wealthiest Americans were the southern plantation owners (slaves & land were both capital assets). That changed rapidly, after the civil war.

Mistrust of cities and city dwellers -- and politicians campaigning against them -- is ancient. But in 1790, when the US constitution was written, only 5% of the US was urban.

Now, they're vilifying 80% of the US population.

Is an ad budget of more than $7,000 per entry-level recruit common for a government agency?

It certainly isn't at any private or public organization I've worked for.

I imagined you would! I'm not sure "enjoy" is the term I would use for a book about people growing rich & powerful by exploiting the trust & hope of others. But it was eye-opening.

I've never encountered anyone so eager to submit. Perhaps he's erred in his choice of profession?

Of course, both Thiel & Musk assume that they'll either be the king, or that the king will submit to them. Perhaps they, in turn, are unclear on the concept of absolute rulers?

I read "Little Bosses Everywhere" by Margaret Read a few months ago. It provided some good insights into the vampires who run MLMs, and how they've managed to insinuate themselves into the mainstream of Republican politics.

Sorry about your mom, and the harm to your family!

Some very watered down aspects are incorporated into teacher training (this is a "majority minority" county), but def not into the school curriculum.

In my experience, most social studies teachers here are middle aged white guys, talking to a roomful of darker-skinned kids.
