it's probably more my media choices recently than anything else, but a lot of stuff i've encountered feels written without as sharp a focus on continuity of theme and character, where Utena as a show wants from its first moments to give you layers to explore for both.

i watched ep 1 yesterday, and it was fantastic coming back to it and seeing just how carefully the three introductions (the fairy tale, Utena through the lens of others, and Anthy through a literal framed shot) are constructed, and how much the story feels written as a whole rather than as parts
