This is an archive of an account used by the Rt Revd Dr John Armes while Bishop of Edinburgh (2012-2025) in the Scottish Episcopal Church (@scottishepiscopal.bsky.social).
Wonderful to be at St John's, Jedburgh, recently.

I preached and celebrated, and met with members of St John’s and their sister congregation St Cuthbert’s, Hawick.

Thanks to the Revd Andi Hofbauer and both congregations for the welcome and retirement well-wishes. Please do pray for them all.

The Fringe show 'Perfectly Imperfect' is based on the story of Grant Bromley, a friend of mine from my Lancashire days. With music and humour, it explores his discovery that he is deeply accepted for who he is as God's imperfect yet beloved child. Please do support Grant! Book: tinyurl.com/2ub5rup3

I was excited to be at stgilescathedral.bsky.social on Sat, thanking God for @christianaiduk.bsky.social's 80 years. It puts into practice Jesus’ call to seek God's Kingdom above all things, to love our neighbour and to be good news for the poor.

There is so much to celebrate about the life of Pope Francis, and therefore also a deep sense of loss at his passing.

He truly set an example of faithfulness to Christ. And how amazing that he has died in the context of Easter with its message of hope for salvation and new life. (1/3)

*An Update from Jordan: Day 4*

Yesterday, our group made a profound and humbling visit to Al-Maghtas, or Bethany Beyond the Jordan – for long centuries believed to be the exact place where Jesus came to John the Baptist to be baptised by him in the Jordan.

This Ash Wednesday, I pray for our Diocese and Christians across Scotland, and that this Lent may bring us closer to God.

"Almighty God, you forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Make in us new and contrite hearts, that we may obtain of you perfect remission and forgiveness [...]."

Wonderful to visit St Vincent's Chapel in Stockbridge, #Edinburgh, last month.

Heartfelt thanks to the congregation and priest-in-charge, The Revd John Penman, for the warm welcome as well as a lovely lunch!

Do keep an eye on the congregation's website for what they are up to: buff.ly/pjR1OHF

Ash Wednesday is nearly here, so take a look at our Diocesan Lent course.

This year's course centres on two key prayers of the Christian tradition – “Christ has no body but yours”, attributed to Teresa of Avila, and “God be in my head” from the Sarum Primer.
