Phoenix Extravagant features a mechanical dragon, a nonbinary artist, and multiple sword lesbians in a setting inspired by Japanese-occupied Korea. I personally ended up wanting a bit more from it, but I think it effectively did what it set out to do.

Some of the metaphors in When Women Were Dragons were confusing, but it was overall a successful feminist historical fantasy with a sapphic lead and also a SAPPHIC DRAGON POLYCULE.

Shatter the Sky is THE book that I would recommend to queer fans of tropey dragon books (inheritance cycle etc). Dragons are controlled with essential oils. There is a bisexual love triangle. The sequel was fun but not as good.

I have recommended To Shape a Dragon’s Breath to everyone I know ever since I read it in February. This historical fantasy follows an indigenous girl who enrolls in a colonizer-run dragon academy. The worldbuilding is stunning, and there is bisexual polyamory!

I loved A Day of Fallen Night even more than Priory. The pacing is stronger, as are the action scenes, and I connected to every single POV character. This is primarily a novel about mothers and daughters, with queer romance, social change, and dragons also very present.

The Priory of the Orange Tree is an epic adventure that reimagines the Saint George and the Dragon myth complete with four POV characters, sapphic romance, and both water- and fire-based dragons. Themes of history/mythology/religion. Highly recommend.
