The government claims Mahmoud Khalil was already in NJ on his way to Louisiana by the time his habeas petition was filed—an argument that the NY federal court lacks jurisdiction.

When I hear it described, it reminds me more of sinking into quicksand than something tipping over.
They're not a binary flip into "irreversibly doomed", they mean sinking faster. Only increasing the urgency of figuring out how to escape (rather than signifying there's nothing that can be done)

I dislike the framing of climate tipping points, but it's good to keep in mind that there are components of the climate system that react nonlinearly to warming and will exacerbate climate change. We don't know the timing, but we know the only way to prevent disaster is to stop burning fossil fuels.
