Chesco, PA
No. 43 - Western Grebe, Montgomery County, PA

Very much a rare visitor to PA, first ever record for Montco, this is a western species, obviously.

Another State Lifer, same sewage pond! This little fella was inseparable from his Killdeer buddy

No. 40 - Red-necked Phalarope, Chester County, PA

A pelagic species, these tiny waders spend most of the year feeding on plankton on the open ocean. We had a couple on a local sewage pond, which was nice! State Lifer

No. 39 - Black-and-white Warbler, Chester County, PA

One of the easiest warblers to get a good look at, as they scurry up and down tree trunks in a manner similar to nuthatches, and don't spend all their time in the upper canopy

No. 38 - Philadelphia Vireo, Chester County, PA

LIFER! Ironically a 'rare' bird here in the Philly area. Similar to No. 37 but has distinctive yellow wash on belly

No. 37 - Red-eyed Vireo, Chester County, PA

Supposedly the most numerous bird in the USA, their songs are the soundtrack to spring and summer in our woodlands

A tiny empid, here clearly identified by its prominent white eyering and short primaries

No. 35 - Black-crowned Night Heron, Chester County, PA

Been neglecting this project a bit, been busy but also increasingly obvious I'll get nowhere near 100 lol. Anyway, have had a few more birds lately so here goes

No. 34 - Little Blue Heron, Chester County, PA

Not very blue; this is a juvenile and will turn dark blue as it reaches maturity. Seems like we only get juvies here, no idea why that is

No. 33 - Veery, Chester County, PA

The all-over-russet thrush with the unmistakable dual-siren song

No. 32 - Eastern Kingbird, Chester County, PA

Never noticed before what tiny little feet these guys have. Totally disproportionate to the big head and bill

A miserable wet one on a very rainy day

A baby, just fledged

No. 29 - American Bittern, Chester County, PA

One of our most charismatic birds, they're much easier to see in the grass (like this) than in their customary reeds where they all but disappear

No. 28 - Long-eared Owl

One of our most elusive and secretive owls, and definitely one of the most handsome. Don't imagine I will get another chance to see one up close like this in my lifetime

#LIFER

No awards for photography but per eBird this male found today is the first of 2025 in the whole Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which is nice

No. 26 - Golden-crowned Kinglet, Chester County, PA

One of our tiniest #birds, seen here during fall, winter and spring. They're particularly abundant right now as they move north to their breeding grounds

No. 25 - Vesper Sparrow, Chester County, PA

#LIFER this morning. This is quite a rare bird in this part of the world so delighted to get this one. Very good-looking sparrow with neat white eyering and chestnut shoulder patch. Shame about the twig and shadows but hey ho

No. 24 - Hermit Thrush, Chester County, PA

First time I've had one in my yard, hanging out on the same trumpet vine where #23 likes to hang out. Small thrush with red tail that contrasts with its brown back

No. 23 - Song Sparrow, Chester County, PA

Absolutely constant peep-peep-peep-babble-babble-babble in my back yard

No. 22 - Eastern Phoebe, Chester County, PA

The first of our flycatchers to arrive in the spring, with some occasionally overwintering, they're now here in abundance and can be seen and heard around pretty much any body of water
