Birds of Tollerton
@birdsoftollerton.bsky.social
A bird by bird listing of the feathered friends of Tollerton, Notts.
Area included: Tollerton village and surrounding fields. Tollerton Airport bordered by the Grantham Canal around to Thurlbeck Dyke to the north/north east.
Target = 80 species.
47. Glossy Ibis, 25/9/25.
Not a bird that I had anticipated in the Tollerton area, with two reported on the canal just east of Tollerton Lane. Managed to relocate one of them still on the canal, they have now settled at Holme Pierrepont.

46. Lesser Black-backed Gull, 14/6/25.
Regular around the village and surrounding fields, around 12 today attracted by the silage harvesting.
June 14, 2025 at 1:53 PM
45. Red Kite, 14/6/25.

44. Short-eared Owl, 6/6/24.
"On this day" - one year ago this beauty greeted me on an evening walk around the fields by the airfield. Seen again a few days later but not since.

Broad-bodied Chaser and Four-spotted Chaser, 21/5/25.
Both these chasers were fighting it out for territory around the garden pond today.
May 21, 2025 at 2:12 PM
43. Yellow Wagtail, 5/5/25.
Super male in the crop fields and sole tree in fields to the north of the area today. Summary migrant and first one of the year for me in the area.

42, Hobby. 5/5/25.
A few birds have now arrived in the wider area with birds at Holme Pierrepont so pleased to see this one today flying over the fields by the airfield.
May 5, 2025 at 10:42 AM
41. Willow Warbler, 5/5/25.
Another summer migrant, and the only one I've seen in the area as the habitat isn't really favourable. In trees alongside the canal.
May 5, 2025 at 10:40 AM
40. Reed Warbler, 5/5/25.
A summer migrant with a few now in reeds along the canal. Always tricky to get a clean shot...
May 5, 2025 at 10:37 AM
39. Lesser Whitethroat, 27/4/25.
Not so common migrant, first few now arriving back. One seen today in scrub adjacent to the airfield, wouldn't play for a photo. Pictured bird is from a year or two back by Spire hospital.
April 27, 2025 at 11:13 AM
Brown Hare, 27/4/25.
Fairly abundant around the airfield and crop fields around the village.

Common garden resident, also known as Hedge Sparrow. Constantly singing at this time of year and a pair nesting in garden hedge.

All year round common resident, at least one pair nesting in the garden.
March 7, 2025 at 9:39 AM
29. Stonechat, 24/2/25.
A bit of pushing the boundaries with this one - seen in field north of the canal but viewable from the canal. One of four pictured, presumably over-wintering birds taking advantage of the seed crop.
February 24, 2025 at 7:09 PM
