This winter visitor from Siberia is a close relative of the American Wigeon. The main features that distinguish Eurasian Wigeon and American Wigeon are gray sides and russet face-markings. They hybridizes occasionally and these birds, which show a mixture of characteristics, are seen in Washington.

Like other nuthatches, Red-breasted Nuthatches use their strong legs and claws to walk up, down, and sideways on tree trunks, probing in the bark crevices for food. They readily come to seed and suet feeders and will cache food in crevices to return to later.

Northern Shovelers inhabit shallow, marshy ponds and wetlands at low elevations. Breeding habitat is in open country, or lowland woodlands and clearings, near shallow water. During winter and migration they will use almost any wetland as long as it has muddy edges.

White-crowned Sparrows are often found in flocks of their own & other species outside of breeding season. Flocks of White-crowned Sparrows fan out into open ground away from sheltering bushes as they feed, flying back to cover if disturbed. They forage on the ground, with sheltered thickets nearby.

Happy Halloween! Here's a fun fact about owls for spooky season. Owls fluoresce pink under UV light. This is due to pigments called porphyrins, and helps researchers age owls. There are more pigments on new feathers, so younger owls glow more uniformly bright pink.

Named for the resemblance of their calls to the sound of saw teeth being sharpened, Northern Saw-whet Owls are small, chestnut-brown owls. They hunt almost entirely at night and return to the same daytime roosts for extended periods and can often be found again on the same perch on subsequent days.

4. Turn off lights at night. Most migratory birds travel at night using celestial cues for navigation. Artificial light can disorient them and expose them to additional hazards.
