Canada ratified the Convention on December 10, 1981. The Convention is a legally binding commitment. By ratifying the Convention, member states condemn discrimination against women in all its forms and commit to combatting discrimination against women in public and private spheres.

Random note as I read through the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women; Article 5 section A is worded in such a manner that it sounds like banning trans women from women's sports for "safety and fairness" is a breach of this convention.
Text which reads: Article 5 States Parties shall take all appropriate measures: (a) To modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women;
