It's Marine Protected Areas Day🌊

MPAs are vital to protect marine habitats & biodiversity

Analysing seabird tracking data led to the designation of NACEs in 2021💙600,000km2 protected & the first high seas MPA identified from tracking data

Tracking data can help to identify where albatrosses encounter threats, including areas that overlap with fisheries.

We can then target conservation efforts that reduce bycatch to where they are most needed.

Tracking data from 48 long-distance pelagic #seabird species, shared by >100 collaborators, were analysed to reveal the consistent & repeatable #migratory routes, including a circumpolar navigation of the Southern Ocean & transhemispheric ‘figures of 8’ in the Pacific & Atlantic oceans
