It’s always exciting getting a first for the Calf in the moth trap… but even more special when they are as stunning as this OLEANDER HAWKMOTH! 🤩

🌌 Always special seeing Storm Petrels up close ✨

A session at @calfofmanbirdobs.bsky.social on Wednesday night under a bright moon produced 7 new birds plus a retrap from last year.

One bird had some funky leucism on its foot, giving the Manxie look a go!

Good to get to know the locals!

Last night the Calf team headed out into the night for a Manx Shearwater ringing session. Always a privilege to see these birds up close, and to meet some proper ‘Manx Manxies’ 😁 6 new and 8 retraps (incl a control).

Kitting up to head to the Calf of Man Bird Obs for the 2025 season means an excuse for new shoes… a stark contrast against a pair that have seen many miles and spent a season in a seabird colony @bardseybirdobs.bsky.social 😅 here’s to even more adventures in the newbies!

Great to speak at Careys Secret Garden’s Migration Festival last Friday, sharing my love of bird migration and the work of Bird Observatories! Also enjoyed brilliant talks by Tim Mackrill 🦅 and @btobirds.bsky.social’s Mike Toms 🐦🗺️

Up in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 helping my sister move house and the location has my approval 😁 At least 8 Little Auk, 2 Razorbill, 10+ LT Duck, 15+ Eider and a winter plumage Puffin on the Forth in a scan off Pettycur Harbour this eve! Less than five mins from the house, brilliant! @fifebirdnews.bsky.social

A bit of gull spotting in Poole Park this afternoon with @edjbetteridge.bsky.social. Just one metal ringed Black-Headed Gull among the crowd. The highlight was three Sandwich Terns heading over towards Parkstone Bay @harbourbirds.bsky.social @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social

Feeling inspired after yesterday’s Dorset Bird Conference! 🐦💚 Great to be part of such a brilliant event. Thanks to all the excellent speakers giving an insight into the Nature Recovery work in Dorset, and to the organisers for making it happen!

Great to join the Yellow-browed Warbler ringing crew today after catching this lovely little sprite this morning @bardseybirdobs.bsky.social 😁🐤 Colour-ringed as part of the nationwide project to find out more about their movements, so keep your eyes peeled this autumn!
