One wonders what the RSPB’s priorities are regarding the climate crisis when each issue of the magazine devotes up to 7 pages to adverts for high-carbon holidays aimed mainly at a generation who has already consumed more than its fair share of the global carbon budget.
April 27, 2025 at 5:31 PM
The RSPB Magazine hasn’t published a single page on carbon budgets and tipping points in the last six years.

That is not one page out of the 2,400 pages that make up the 24 latest issues of the magazine sent quarterly to its 1.2 million members.

First cuckoo of the year on the patch. A shy male singing a couple of notes every five minutes.

Research about wildlife tourism is at best ambivalent about its impact on people and biodiversity – even without considering CO2 emissions.

Yet, the image some birdwatchers have of 'ecotourism' is overwhelmingly positive. Why? 🧵

‘What would it look like if we expanded our conception of what a scientist needs to be in the twenty-first century? What if every scientist were to stand up for science, joining thousands of their colleagues to demand the systemic changes we desperately need?’

If you are concerned about the climate crisis but have not found your voice yet, the new book #ScientistsForSurvival is a good place to start.

We love our ornithology classics – the essential ID guide, the perennially relevant monograph, the reliable handbook.

But all these and what they represent – fulfilling careers and joyful hobbies enabled by peace and prosperity – will matter little or may not exist without a stable climate.

‘It might seem like nobody’s listening when we talk of greenhouse gasses, 2050 and 1.5C, but maybe that’s not how best to break the silence. With a relevant story, a human angle and a little creativity, I think we can find ways to spark those crucial conversations.’

On the patch

‘another species worthy of mention is Water Pipit. I’ve enjoyed studying these birds on my patch over the years and find that they become more conspicuous in March (…). Many look rather smart by the middle of the month.’

1/3 *Wildlife / nature media and high-carbon travel ads*

Advertising does not simply inform, it also shapes demand.

A transition towards sustainability requires a reduction in advertising for high-carbon products.

How much space do birding / nature mags devote to high-carbon wildlife holidays?

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust has over 200,000 members.

In 2019 its magazine used to include adverts for exotic holidays.

Today it includes none.

A small but effective gesture to normalise low-carbon birding.

… and it slow things down.

One of the reasons why it slows things down is because it breeds disaffection. Others don’t want to be associated with that tactic.

The flying less movement is making significant progress in changing the travel culture within academia where it was born.

The key advocates of flying less explicitly discourage shaming individuals.

NASA scientists & climate campaigner Peter Kalmus explains the reasons here.

The @NationalTrust.bsky.social has 5.37 million members.

Prior to the pandemic its magazine used to include adverts for exotic holidays (pic left mags from 2019).

Today it includes none.

A small but effective gesture to help normalise low-carbon lifestyles.

'The following morning, I fetched my red bike from the shed and cycled twelve miles to the coast, and Holkham. With this, I launched into a winter to be spent with Norfolk's brents and pinkfeet; with the geese which, thirty years before, a scrawny mop-haired boy had learned to love.'

Walk early this week around Nidderdale (22km). Spent the morning sketching Canada geese, looking for barn owls and visiting potential breeding site for ring ouzels. Flocks of 5-10 curlews (one 25) in breeding grounds. Numbers of stonechat and meadow pipit building up.

Train reading on the way home after a very well organised @btobirds.bsky.social conference full of high quality talks. Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

Yes, and I think that is a fair point. Similar arguments are frequently made in discussions about mitigation.
