Birding!
It seemed very chilled! Hope it's OK although was diving a lot later apparently, hopefully finding food. Not as good as a Dartford but great to see! 😄

Thanks James! 😃

Thank you 😊 I expected one on a large expanse of water, not a river. Although I wasn't expecting one at all really!

Thank you Louise! 😄

I'd like to think they can recognise and react to the dead swans - gives them a chance to avoid! Quite a long trip back north but no doubt drawn to somewhere familiar and safer. Will be interesting to see your tracking results from the season

Could be a life saving move if it's avoided bird flu. Do you think there is any possibility it detected and responded to dead and dying swans, in a specific threat avoidance action? Or was it triggered by the more general issues you mention in your article?

I've been in touch with the Site Manager and reported to Defra. Warden is checking tomorrow. Thanks for highlighting this. Not good at all ☹️

Do they have pale eyelids? Johnny Hook and I observed similar on the cell 10 female, eye showing momentarily pale on occasions. I thought it was perhaps blinking but couldn't find anything in the literature about it

Yes, that was reported on a local WhatsApp in response to my sighting. Hopefully it's an accurate count so looks like the Manea could be over 100 😀
October 26, 2025 at 5:55 PM
I think there have been higher counts historically from what Hugh was saying. The Manea flock maybe over 100 as they don't all feed together

I completely agree. Really lifts the spirits 🙂 Hope all is good with you Laurinda

Can't fail to bring a smile 😊

You need to come to Cambs 😄
October 18, 2025 at 6:31 PM
Yes, in my 5 years of birding it's usually just one Pf here or there but then last winter large flocks settled around March and Manea. So perhaps they will again and are pushing more into Cambs. Delighted to see and hear them going over 😃

I saw a group on the Ouse Washes on Sunday and most were asleep which is unusual. Probably exhausted! They all looked much perkier by Wednesday and had found a nearby field to feed in

Sorry @Laziobirder.bsky.social, until I saw this I hadn't appreciated that the Coal Tit you found yesterday on Barra is evidently quite rare locally! Nice 😀
