Enjoying the wintry conditions as of late. A flock of 20 crossbill relying on the water trough at Clumber Park for the past couple days. Also the wolf moon was particularly special.

Hen Harrier Susie, whose chicks were stamped to death on a Yorkshire Dales grouse moor in 2022, has been found dead on a N Pennines grouse moor with gunshot injuries.

18+ months of silence about this crime from the police & Natural England.

If ever there was an example demonstrating the high level of persecution faced by Hen Harriers on UK grouse moors, the lack of consequences for the offenders, and the lack of justice for the victim…

Working nearby so made a quick visit to a blustery Alvecote pools yesterday. Good numbers of waterfowl, albeit nothing of note; 29 shoverlers, 5 wigeon, 3 GWE, 1 goosander (fem), 3 snipe, 4 LG, 3 GG, CC, CW and stonechat pair. What ever happened with Jenny (roy) of alvecote?

A family trip to the holy island today. I didn't see anything of note, although hawthorn laden bushes harboured good numbers of thrushes.

Not much actual 'birding' on a family holiday, still enjoyable to pick up the expected. Ross sands: Movements of grey plover, turnstone, sanderling, ringed plover, c scoter, RB merganser, RT diver. Blackbird and redwing in off and goldcrest and tcreeper skulking in the dunes.
