Can confirm. I am an exceptional ski lift operator, and yet I was an average child.

One of the first things that came to mind unfortunately. What a wild show

I just want to stress that this has nothing to do with the rest of the chapter. She has an epigraph, a bizarre intro paragraph, a description of Britney Spears dancing in 2002 and then a section about Donald Trump promoting birtherism.

Yeah I've got an unhealthy relationship to an academic i haven't read in years, not you, an edge lord going out of their way to rail against a boogeyman you hallucinated. Have a good one bud. Stay safe out there

I worked for years as a ski lift operator for this exact reason. I just moved to the city and am trying to find the equivalent type of job, trying to get hired as a parking lot attendant at the moment. I cant seem to find openings as a front desk guy of that sort

What is? lack of accountability? What are you talking about??

Why are you spending your time making up nonsense about an academic you didn't like when you could be watching Fight Club and scrolling through Joker memes?

it's easily my least favorite Graeber book, but no, the idea that there should be "elements of accountability" is not "a big part" of BS jobs. That's silly. And I'm sorry if the belief that humans can be good and wonderful things are possible offends your "cynic" sensibilities :(

what exactly is his "understanding of how the world works"? And who is saying any of his books should be treated as "the one book"? What are you talking about?

second was an independent and is currently in prison for possession of child porn) come to the conclusion that she's some sort of really effective politician. it pains me. so many opinions on Maine politics from people who knew nothing about it until roughly six months ago

I am constantly asking myself this. best guess is people looked at wikipedia, saw how handily she beat Lepage, a two-term governor, and without any understanding of Maine politics (like the fact that Lepage is a widely hated moron whose first election was a three-way race, and the guy who came in...

the thing about a figure of speech is that it's typically used to convey meaning, in this case "i don't understand why people like good books and dislike bad books"
November 21, 2025 at 5:45 PM
So you understand that Graeber's book is broadly good/informative and that Harrari's is "not good", but you don't understand why Graeber "doesn't get half as much hate"?? Seems like you figured it out, actually...

The idea that Debt and Dawn of Everything are on the level of Sapiens is silly. Ofc there are criticisms, but my understanding is that, overall, they are pretty impressive and valuable academic works. There are some people out there that seem obsessed with hating Graeber, though. not sure why
