I think letting the world around Doug be kinda nuts helps give the show its charm. All the people are colored like skittles, the economy thrives on beets, people have names like “Mayonnaise” and “Sleech.” It captures the gentle bewilderment of childhood.

It’s also remarkable that a show this laid-back and earnest could succeed in a media landscape that tended towards the overstimulating and the rebellious. Angelica tormented her infant playmates and Ren and Stimpy were pure anarchists, but Doug was over there just trying to be nice.

Ok but that was from *before* development of the sequel got announced. This revelation has been superseded by Jinkins himself.
