(hourglass has already earned me quite a bit from the sbcf, which atm is still THE gem of the indie comics community, and i am fine just knowing that it's out there being printed overseas and submitted to awards and stuff. but always be careful/realistic when it comes to contracts...)

it sucks even more knowing that these kinds of practices are commonplace in indie scenes outside of the us market (like here in italy where you basically have to work for free). go to indie publishers only with completed projects that will look good on your resume

But money? Small-press publishing is best for cartoonists starting out who have a day job or some other source of support, and you almost invariably have to look at it as a wholesale financial loss that may yield long-term professional benefits at the expense of short-term gains.
