Big brain stuff happening in Hilo. Turns out you shouldn’t drive a backhoe on a pedestrian bridge.

I’m unsure, but the sky photographed differently than it normally does and so we might have gotten something. People were able to see aurora last year and so it’s possible.

I’m feeling more confident that we are getting some of it down here. No other reason here for the diversity in colours I’m picking up in quick succession on a crappy 3-second iPhone photo.

Normally I’d say this is probably light pollution but we don’t have much of that here in Hawai‘i. Maybe I was able to capture the dregs of #aurora with my phone? Certainly nothing visible with the naked eye, I’m skeptical.

No aurora likely visible in Hawai‘i but sometimes my drive home looks like this.

Episode 36 of the ongoing eruption of #Kīlauea was short with tough viewing conditions, but still quite spectacular.

I have a mug with this picture on it. We talk about her amazing contributions to science and how she was not allowed on the research cruises in my 100-level classes. They are blown away when they see that hand drawn map!

And athletes in Buffalo!

There is nothing stopping you from enjoying both activities, it doesn’t have to be an either or. My science interests have made delightful projects. A personal favourite is the a- and b-axis olivine sweater.

Highlight of the field day was finding a pig’s tail disarticulated from the original owner. Also we measured the offset of faults with our undergraduates today. Mauna Loa made a brief appearance before hiding behind the clouds.

I caught a cousin of Factory Butte south of Towaoc with some moody weather a few years back.

I got to a point where I got frustrated enough by not being able to find or purchase what I was looking for and learned to build my own furniture to fit my space.

Kīlauea episode 35 has arrived. The double fountain shot is from one of the HVO interns, Christina. All are taken from the public viewing areas.

This upcoming episode’s flavor of gas pistoning has been pretty spectacular.

This friend, scolopendra subspinipes, packs a spicy bite. This one was about 5in (12.7cm) long and hanging around the outside of my lab today.

I must have sat next to one of his relatives on a different flight…

Episode 34 of the ongoing eruption of #Kīlauea

Woke up and looked out my window, insomnia has its perks. Episode 34 is here after several days of overflow cycles. #Kīlauea

We’re living in stupid times, enjoy this video of turtles bobbing around in the surf.

One of the HVO interns (Christina) grabbed this shot of episode 33 from the public viewing area.

I saw this dog on my way to work. 10/10 commute experience.

Same direction as previous fountains (right to left on the photo), the vent morphology just makes it look really wide at the point of exit.
