New from University of Pittsburgh Neural Engineering Cross-Translation (UP NExT): PV interneurons don’t just control brain rhythms, they fine-tune blood flow too.
2P imaging + optogenetics, we found depth-specific vasoconstriction & dilation shaping both sensory-evoked & resting-state hemodynamics.

Small movements between the brain and the array create stress on tissue differently:
-Outer electrodes: Take the most direct mechanical stress, causing scarring.
-Inner electrodes: Stress on the edges can pinch blood vessels, reducing nutrients to neurons in the center, weakening them over time.

Strong showing from @PittBioE’s UP NExT program at #SfN2025 in San Diego!
Trainees & faculty are advancing neural engineering across scales, from glial modulation & ICMS to neurovascular imaging & computational models.
See how Pitt is redefining neural engineering.

Thrilled to be promoted to full professor! Grateful to my students, colleagues, & peers in review. Your challenges & support sharpened our science for impact. What a 10-yr journey it's been since starting my lab in 2015! #AcademicTwitter #Science

Maximizing taxpayer-funded research means capping journal fees, but we must avoid delays & support early-career scientists. Share ideas for equitable, cost-effective publishing with NIH by 9/15/25: osp.od.nih.gov/comment-form... #OpenAccess #SciencePolicy #NIH

PATRIOTS! The Senate’s NIH vote on 7/31 could lock in a disastrous multi-year funding policy, slashing $7B from research. It KILLS jobs in PA, AL, WV, WASTES your tax dollars, hikes healthcare costs, & lets China win in science. #SaveNIH #AmericaFirst

🚨 NIH’s 2025 policy pushing non-animal methods for grants risks harming neuroscience & taxpayers. Organoids can’t mimic brain implant or vision systems. White Coat Waste’s pressure & Project 2025’s cuts add urgency. Comment by 7/14, 5 PM EST

Axolotl mucus could fight MRSA & cancer, per a PLOS ONE study: done w/o funding. NIH’s shift from basic research to translational “wins” leaves breakthroughs to chance. Basic science, like CRISPR’s roots, needs funding to deliver taxpayer value. #ScienceFunding #Innovation #NIH #BasicScience

NIH’s 2025 policy on animal testing grants worries neuroscientists. Organoids & in silico models can’t yet replicate glymphatic systems for brain implants or complex vision circuits. Strict animal model justifications may delay funding & discoveries. #Neuroscience #NIH

OBBBA's $5T deficit, Medicaid/SNAP cuts, & AI deregulation spark backlash. Unpopular (24 pts underwater), it risks alienating MAGA's base with higher prices & job threats, hurting GOP in '26 midterms. #BigBeautifulBill

DOGE experiment has cost US taxpayers >$34B to find out fraud was "relatively non-existent", says DOGE engineer. (DOGE operational cost, administrative leave, lost productivity, buyout, severance package, rehiring packages, on-boarding time)

Probationary doesn't mean underperformers. It also means outstanding performers that got a promotion, and if that promotion "failed" during the probationary period, then they would return to the pre-promotion position. Instead, DOGE just fired everyone.
