That's where "phytomining" enters the picture.

This nascent industry is using special metal-accumulating plants to develop a less destructive way to mine--or should we say farm?--metals.
November 6, 2025 at 2:04 PM
But what if there was another way?

What if there was a way to obtain the metals we want--nickel, cobalt, cadmium, zinc--without the need for destructive strip mining or deep sea adventures?

The Java mouse-deer is neither a mouse nor a deer, though it resembles both. About the size of a hare, the mouse-deer carries its big ears, pointed snout, and relatively rotund body atop pencil-thin legs.

The only way to reverse the devastation is to rescue and restore wild populations of sunflower and other sea stars. But “we can’t save them if we don’t know why they’re dying,” says disease ecologist Alyssa Gehman.

In 2013, sea stars began dying along North America’s West Coast, victims of a plague known as sea star wasting disease. The condition first surfaced in the Pacific Northwest, where scientists and scuba divers noticed sea stars sporting grisly lesions, white and splotchy.

The computer system pings a remote expert on standby who double-checks the machine’s work. Within a minute, the expert forwards the alert back to the ship, catching the captain’s attention with enough time for the crew to change course and, hopefully, avoid the whale becoming maritime roadkill.

Now, advances in transmitter and battery technology are extending the use of miniaturized tags to the aquatic environments, offering scientists a new view of the small species whose unexamined lives are propping up entire ecosystems.

These cotton balls on toothpicks nest on the ground, and have long been the victims of predation by the island's red foxes. But in 2015, an outbreak of sarcoptic mange tore through Fire Island's foxes.

So far this year, reader donations have funded 20 bioGraphic stories that might have otherwise gone untold. (That's two months’ worth of stories!)

Our campaign ends at midnight tonight. ⌛ If you haven’t donated yet, will you help us across the finish line?

Whales have big eyes, so they should have good eyesight.

But as it turns out, humpbacks have relatively few retinal ganglion cells--the photoreceptors on the back of the eye that capture light.

The result is that, from a distance, a net is hard to pick out, and harder to avoid.

It’s Time for Nature’s Fire Brigade

When it comes to restoring land and preventing wildfires, some animals—like pangolins—have a lot to offer. Can helping them help us?

In 2019, in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the city embarked on a project to add green roofs to 316 bus stops. They planted sedum, a hearty succulent, to attract pollinators.

But as new research shows, the project had an unexpected benefit for a different group of species: mychorrizal fungi

The focus of today's story tackles the latter.

WhaleSpotter, a new AI-powered but, crucially, human-verified detection system uses heat-sensing cameras to track whales in real time, giving captains up-to-the-minute alerts if a whale crosses their path.
