Bioclimatology lab at the University of Göttingen/Germany led by Alexander Knohl. We research the interaction between land ecosystems and the atmosphere in a changing environment.
Another great talk by Dennis Baldocchi on his work at the wetlanda in the Sacramento delta in California. Lots of interest from the German wetland community.

Dennis Baldocchi gave a stimulating talk at the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities on the Demise of K-theory with nice references to the pioniering work by Ludwig Prandtl and Theodor von Karman on boundary layer theory done here on Göttingen 100 years ago.

Another two days of great talks and discussions at the Baldocchi Symposium in Göttingen. Lots of fun at the visits of our flux towers Reinshof and Hainich.
Thanks everyone for coming and making it a wonderful event.

First day of the Baldocchi Symposium in Göttingen. More than 40 scientists are discussing fluxes anywhere and anytime. Great atmosphere!

Congratulation to José Ángel for defending his PhD!! Great work on CO2, H2O and energy fluxes of agroforestry systems. Ivan Mammarella (Uni Helsinki) and Annette Menzel (TU Munich) joined as external examiners. Afterwards we had the traditional walk to the Gänse Liesel fountain in the city center.

Happy to announce we’ve set up a new eddy covariance flux tower at a forest restoration site in the Harz Mountains. The area was clear-cut after a bark beetle outbreak and reforested with broadleaves. A unique opportunity to investigate ecosystem fluxes and forest resilience across recovery stages.

Peatlands are under pressure due to ongoing degradation, pushing the global biome from net sink to source. At #DBG2025 in Tübingen, we demonstrated how vegetation shifts affect carbon fluxes of a mountain peatland and outlined methods to downscale ecosystem methane fluxes to the plant-species scale.

Visit of Johannes Laubach from the Landscare Research Group in New Zealand, an alumni from the bioclimatology group in Goettingen in the 90s. Great to reconnect.
September 25, 2025 at 9:10 AM
Great discussions on eddy covariance measurement for CO2 and H2O isotopologues with our partners from FZ Jülich at the annual meeting of our project ISOMONEAE as part of the ITMS (www.itms-germany.de)

Welcome to Göttingen: Biometeorologist Prof. Dennis Baldocchi (UC Berkeley) joins the bioclimatology group at @uni-goettingen.de as Gauss Professor for two months. In early October, an international symposium on land–atmosphere processes will take place.

Paper alert! Justus van Ramshorst et al. showed that the net ecosystem-scale carbon uptake of alley-cropping #agroforestry in Germany was higher compared to adjacent monocropping using lower-cost eddy covariance. More details at: doi.org/10.1007/s104...

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Justus van Ramshorst on successfully defending his PhD! It's been a real pleasure having you in the group — looking forward to seeing what’s next for you. Well done! 👏 #PhDDefense #NewDoctor

Visit of the Hainich Nationalpark Administration and Park Rangers at our ICOS flux tower.
Thanks a lot for giving us the opportunity to work in this amazing forest for now over 25 years.

As part of the visit, our team also met with counterparts at IPB University and the University of Jambi, strengthening research collaboration and exchanging knowledge on tropical ecosystem monitoring and sustainable land management practices.
May 19, 2025 at 10:45 AM
The Jambi site provides critical insights into the biogeochemical processes and carbon dynamics associated with oil palm cultivation in tropical lowland ecosystems. Our visit aimed to assess ongoing measurement infrastructure, gain hands-on exposure to flux tower instrumentation, and maintenance.

Located in Jambi Province on Sumatra Island, Indonesia, this site has been recording continuous greenhouse gas flux and micromet data since March 2014.
May 19, 2025 at 10:45 AM
In March, our research team conducted a field visit to the Jambi Oil Palm Plantation, a long-term eddy covariance flux monitoring site that is part of the AsiaFlux network.

Paper alert! Drollinger et al. show that shorter, more intense rain events in European beech forests shrink throughfall and amplify moisture patchiness, gradually loosening hydrological links and altering Critical Zone function. Link: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... #Hydrology #Climate
