At the end of the day, the "most uniquely popular pokemon" isn't going to effect your daily life. But this kind of misinterpretation of a graphic could effect your views of other states/countries etc if it was about a politically charged issued like religion or LGBTQA+ rights etc.

I think what a graph like this is missing, is the conditional probability of how popular each Pokemon actually is comparing to other pokemon (so unpopular Pokemon globally that a small community of people like in a country have a huge effect). Also, how much a country searches in general.

For a Pokemon like Mr.Mine Jr, maybe in Vietnam he is searched once out of the 1000 total searches, so 0.1%. Thus, Pikachu is more "uniquely popular"

So why does Pikachu show up as the "uniquely favorite" other places? Maybe Pokemon isn't as popular and Pikachu is just so popular relative to other Pokemon they don't get searched. A country like Vietnam, maybe Pikachu is searched 5,000 times a month. Out of the 10mil globally, that is 0.5%

Let's now look at Mr.Mime Jr! Maybe he is searched 100 times monthly globally. Maybe 70 of those searches are from USA. So 70% of all Mr.Mime Jr searches are in the US! Wow they love him there!! No, just 70 people do. Doesn't outweigh the million searches in the USA for Pikachu

I don't have the actual data, but let's go through a hypothetical example. Say globally Pikachu is searched 10,000,000 times a month. In the USA, Pikachu is searched 1,000,000 times. Thus Pikachu in the USA has a percentage of 10%.

So, how is TheToyZone using this data? For example in the USA for Pikachu, they calculate the attached. What the number that comes out of this means, is the percentage of all searches of Pikachu are from the USA.

The summary first says "volume of data" and uses Ahrefs to get it- what does that mean? Here's their site ahrefs.com/seo/glossary... - read for yourself, but they say essentially the number of times users on average search a term in a month

I'm going to do my best to explain, but basically my advice when you see shocking graphics like this is to think carefully about what it is actually measuring
November 10, 2024 at 12:58 PM
So this is not the most popular pokemon- they claim "most uniquely popular pokemon". Their explanation is confusing, and while at the end of the day this particular thing doesn't have a huge impact, understanding what a graphic is really telling us is super important! Good skill to learn
