For me, Inland Empire started to make a lot more sense on the third watch, but agreed that it’s among his most challenging work.

I loved being able to linger in those dream worlds for days on end, long after the credits had rolled. He was a worshipper of the creative process itself, in love with the very idea of ideas. We are ever in need of more creators who dive this deeply, who value manifestation over monetization.

Even though his dreams often played out more like nightmares, the sensation of leaving my own headspace for awhile and entering his was always unique, always bursting with the promise of new potential for cinema in general, no matter how unconventional or downright crazy his spaces often were.

Film discourse often tends to equate movies with dreams, but in my experience, truly dream-like movies are exceedingly rare. One director demonstrated mastery in this area beyond all others. Seeing a Lynch movie for the first time was an opportunity I always treasured.
