Thanks for this piece! Lecun is absolutely correct; I did my PhD machine learning in the early 90s, focused on biologically motivated neural networks. LLMs are impressive, but will lie to you every chance they get. We will not get to “the singularity” via that path.

I was living in Washington DC at the time and I remember the advertising posters being plastered all over the metro buses. We went to see it as soon as it came out. Absolutely incredible. Still stands up very well.

Saw Neil a few times. Always amazing. 1985 St. Pete, FL Bayfront Center. One week after Farm Aid. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

And I was working for NIST in the mid ‘90s as a post doc and experienced the web through an early version of the Mosaic browser. I’ll never forget the unadulterated Internet before it was ruined by e-commerce.

Yes, there is something about mono. A friend of mine played me Hendrix‘s “Axis, Bold as Love“ in mono on an LP and for some reason I heard sound elements I had never heard a stereo. Still confuses me. :-)

Excellent. I think he should start smoking about six packs a day to further provide evidence for his theory.
